The Science behind Story Narrative.
- WHY USING FABLES OR ANTHROPOMORPHIC SYMBOLISM IS EFFECTIVE IN IMPROVING HUMAN BEHAVIOR.
- It’s engaging and Memorable: Fables often tell entertaining stories with relatable characters. Fables can be created that communicate on multiple levels, making them effective for adults and children. The use of anthropomorphic symbolism, where animals or objects take on human characteristics, creates a fascinating and imaginative world that captures our attention.
- Universal Themes: The archetypes in most stories are cross-cultural. Archetypes act as if they are preexisting in our brains, just waiting for a situation to give them life. We learn best through story. Fables usually convey universal archetypal themes and moral lessons that are applicable cross-culturally and across generations. They simplify what is complex in life and chop up behaviors into digestible chunks of ideas that resonate with people from different backgrounds.
- Non-Threatening Learning: Because fables use objects instead of directly addressing individuals, they provide a safe and non-threatening way to discuss sensitive or difficult current issues. This can help learners feel more open to introspection and self-improvement.
- Emotional Connection: Changes can occur over time, but to make rapid change it takes emotion. Characters in fables often evoke emotions and empathy, leading to a stronger emotional connection to the message. This They act as empathogens, reinforcing the impact of the lesson and encouraging more positive behavioral changes.
- Practical Lessons: Fables are often designed to teach practical life lessons and ethical principles, such as the importance of honesty, kindness, hard work, and humility – many of the tenants of stoicism. By presenting these lessons in story form, it becomes easier to understand how to apply them in real-life situations.
- Encourages Critical Thinking: Fables often pose moral dilemmas. Characters have to make ethical Too many times in life we just react without really “thinking.” Stopping our reaction for, even moments, can allow thinking to catch up and consider the consequences of our actions.
- Cultural Preservation: Many fables are rooted in cultural traditions and folklore, helping to preserve and pass down valuable lessons and knowledge from one generation to another.
- Teaching Complex Concepts: Anthropomorphic symbolism becomes a really useful tool when teaching complex concepts. By using metaphorical representations, abstract ideas become more accessible and understandable.
Overall, fables and anthropomorphic symbolism create a safe way to examine our own thoughts and behaviors, while weaving a narrative that is engaging and moving. Many of the fictional books and movies that become popular in the 21st Century – just as they were in prior centuries – are modern fables.
